Analysis of Hydrodynamic Pressures in the Stilling Basin of an Earth Dam - page 4



Based on the analysis of hydrodynamic pressures in the stilling basin of Beni Slimane Dam, the following conclusions were drawn:

  • The nature of the dependency of mean pressures on tailwater levelsis the same at the bottom and side walls.
  • The flow in the stilling basin is three-dimensional, as a result of the widening stilling basin configuration.
  • Mean pressures decrease with increasing discharge, due to increasing flow velocity.
  • Pressure fluctuations increase with increasing discharge, except at the highest discharge that was tested.
  • Pressure fluctuations are the highest immediately downstream from the impact of the stream leaving the chute, and decrease downstream. The nature of the mean pressures is the opposite; they increase from the upstream to the downstream end of the stilling basin.
